Erdogan can run for the presidency for the 3rd time

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan may be nominated for the third time as head of state if the parliament decides to hold early elections in the second half of 2027. A similar opinion was expressed by Mehmet Uchum, senior advisor to the Turkish leader, TASS reports.

"According to the Constitution, if the Parliament decides to hold extraordinary elections in the second term of the current President, the President can be a candidate again, according to Article 116/3 of the Constitution," Uchum wrote in X.

Erdogan's second presidential term expires in 2028, after which, according to the law, the politician cannot run again, as he has held this position for two consecutive terms. At the same time, the country regularly activates the discussions about the extraordinary elections, the possibility of which the leadership of the country has not confirmed yet.

Uchum noted that the issue of holding extraordinary elections can be resolved only by the parliament.

"The unique possibility of Erdogan's candidacy for the president can only be possible if the relevant constitutional provision is applied. The power to make such a decision belongs to the parliament.

If, with the consent of 360 deputies, he decides to hold the elections early before the general elections scheduled for May 7, 2028, for example, in the second half of 2027, then President Erdogan will be able to run again, and this will be the last time," Uchum said.
