Vazgen Tevanyan, the World Championship bronze medalist and European champion, won a silver medal at the freestyle wrestling World Championships held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports reports that 65 kg wrestler Vazgen Tevanyan, competing in the World Championships final for the first time, faced the USA representative Bowen Basetti in the decisive bout and lost to his opponent.
Vazgen Tevanyan started the competition from the qualification round, where he defeated the representative of Mongolia with a score of 9:3. In the round of sixteen, Vazgen defeated the representative of Kazakhstan 2:1, in the quarterfinals he won 3:2 against Iranian Rahman Musa Amouzad Khalili, Olympic silver medalist and two-time world champion. In the semifinals, he won 2:1 against Shamil Mamedov, the World Championships bronze medalist representing Bulgaria.
In the semifinal bout, the Armenian wrestler suffered a fracture of his ankle.
