Researchers at the Institute of Space Sciences have presented one of the most detailed analyzes of samples of C-type asteroids, the small carbon-containing bodies considered the "building blocks" of the early Solar System. The work was published in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" (MNRAS).
C-type asteroids have attracted the attention of scientists and engineers for decades. They are the source of carbonaceous chondrites, rare meteorites that fall to Earth in a fraction of the time and often disintegrate upon entering the atmosphere.
The team analyzed the samples collected and assembled in the labs, then conducted high-precision mass spectrometry. This allowed them to determine the chemical proportions of six major classes of carbonaceous chondrites and compare them with data from asteroid surfaces. According to the researchers, this mapping is the basis for planning future missions and the technological solutions needed to exploit the resources of small bodies.
