On this day in 1978, humanity overcame smallpox

On October 26, 1978, the World Health Organization announced the eradication of smallpox. Smallpox is an acute infectious viral disease of humans, mammals and birds. It is characterized by high infectivity, a unique nodular-bubble rash (which leaves a scar after healing) and a severe clinical course.

The causative agents of the flower are shriveled viruses that are resistant to desiccation and low temperatures. The source of infection is a sick person. The virus is transmitted through the air, rarely through objects (linen, clothes, toys). The secret period is 5-17, the average is 14 days.

The disease begins with a sharp rise in temperature up to 40 °C, with excruciating headaches, nausea, back pain. At the end of the 3rd day, red spots appear on the face, limbs, palms and soles. In the following days, the elements of the rash go through several stages of development: nodule, blister, pustule, and then peel and dry, leaving a characteristic scar.

It was possible to overcome the disease thanks to vaccinations. Now this disease does not occur.
