An unusual way of protection from chronic pain was found

Regular motor training, such as playing a musical instrument, can reduce the sensitivity of chronic pain and protect the brain from its impact. Scientists from the University of Albargi (Denmark) and Haydelberg (Germany) have reached this conclusion. The results of the study were published in the Pain magazine.

Both professional musicians and non-musical individuals took part in the experiment. Researchers model long-lasting muscle pain, injecting the participants in the hands of the nerve growth factor, a substance that makes several days inconvenience. Then they used transranal magnetic stimulation to assess the changes in coricomotomotric connections.

The results showed that the musicians have caused less changes in the "mobile map of the brain" and subjectively perceived as less intense than in the control group. Scientists explain this by increasing the plasticity of the nervous system, which develops over the years of motor training.

The authors of the study say the results can be the basis for new rehabilitation methods. Repeated movements and exercises for the development of motor skills can reduce the intensity of chronic pain and contribute to the recovery of motorized function.
