The Lemkin Institute warns that a premature celebration of peace is dangerously ignoring the history of Azerbaijan's genocidal behavior and the continuous dangers of Armenia's sovereignty. The text of the agreement signed on August 8 in Washington is missing the basic issues that are vital to long peace in the region.
Justice 2023 For the Artsakh Genocide, the rights of 100,000 displaced Armenians, the release of Armenian prisoners of war and political prisoners, the fate of the cultural heritage and the mechanisms of providing responsibility.
Instead, it makes Armenia withdraw its deeds from the UN International Court of Justice and ECHR, eliminating the only legal ways to achieve the truth and justice.
It also strengthens Azerbaijan's position, eliminating third party control over the border, providing its long-awaited corridor by the Syunik region of Armenia, ignoring the continuous occupation of Armenian territories and genocidal rhetoric against the Armenians.
The Lemkin Institute emphasizes that this agreement is a priority to the interests of Armenia's security, the support of Azerbaijan's expansion agenda, and even the existence of Armenia as a state.
