The head of the European Union's diplomatic service, Josep Borrell, considers Israel's murder of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar a step towards Lebanon gaining sovereignty. Borrell told reporters upon arrival at a meeting of G7 defense ministers in Naples.
“The death of Yahya Sinwar opens up new prospects for a truce and the release of hostages, as well as for finding a political solution to the conflict,” he said, adding that this also creates potential conditions “for the restoration of Lebanese sovereignty.” According to Borrell, the Group of Seven "must promote a truce and the holding of elections for the Lebanese President." To do this, “the mandate of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon must be revised,” since “there is no more peace in Lebanon,” Borrell believes, emphasizing that this requires a unanimous decision of the UN Security Council.
