Ukraine's acquisition of nuclear weapons would violate NPT obligations

The transfer of nuclear weapons to Ukraine would be a violation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and would also create international security risks, said Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to him, the statements in Ukraine, which "can be interpreted as a direct request to review Ukraine's nuclear-weapon-free status" and question the viability of the Budapest memorandum, are cause for concern.

"We have also noted the statements of some Western politicians and officials suggesting that nuclear weapons be returned to Kyiv, if nuclear weapons are actually transferred to the Kyiv regime, this would be a direct violation of all NPT obligations," Zakharova said in a statement.
