The majority of Canadians are not against their country's membership in the European Union, but, in practice, it is impossible to implement, reports The Globe and Mail. Referring to a survey conducted by Spark Advocacy, the publication clarified that 58% of Canadians believe that it would be a "good idea" for their country to join the "economic and political bloc of European countries."
The survey was conducted in March and included 4,000 respondents. However, the newspaper notes that in practice this idea is impossible to implement.
In particular, the implementation of this initiative will require Canada's withdrawal from the North American Trade Agreement signed with the United States and Mexico and the alignment of its trade legislation with European standards. Currently, more than 70% of Canadian exports go to the United States and only 8% to Europe. Furthermore, Canada has yet to ratify bilateral trade agreements with 10 EU countries, including Italy, Poland and France.
