A Bank of America customer service representative hung up the phone during a call to update his contact information with Pope Leo XIV, the New York Times reported, citing Father Tom McCarthy, a close friend of the pope.
According to the newspaper, the grandfather identified himself during the call and said he wanted to change his phone number and address in his bank records. The Pope dutifully answered all the security questions, but the representative told him that this was not enough and that he would have to come to the bank in person. According to McCarthy, the grandfather told him that he could not come. "Would it make a difference if I said I was Pope Levon," according to McCarthy, the newspaper quoted the pope as saying. After this question, the newspaper reported, the bank employee "hung up the phone".
According to the paper, Father Tom McCarthy told the story last week during a meeting with Catholics in Naperville, Illinois. He also confirmed in an e-mail to the publication that the incident is true.
