The escalation of relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia may turn into a full conflict in the future, journalist Jörg Kronauer believes in an article published in the German newspaper Junge Welt. "The UAE's withdrawal from OPEC on May 1 may further aggravate the tension in the Arabian Peninsula. The immediate reason is economic disagreements with Saudi Arabia.
Abu Dhabi wants to sell more oil in the future and feels too constrained by OPEC production quotas, which are largely determined by Riyadh," Kronauer writes.
The author of the article also pointed out the differences in foreign policy between the countries. He noted that "at the beginning of the Iran-Iraq war, the joint defense against Iranian drones and missiles masked the tension." However, the situation eventually escalated again, as supporters of closer cooperation with Israel and the United States in Abu Dhabi make progress, while in Riyadh they seek a compromise with Iran to restore stability.
