Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who arrived in Yerevan, talked about the new prospect of friendship with Turkey and citing Davutoglu's "zero problem with neighbors" theory, argued to Serzh Sargsyan why Syria cannot go to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
Sargsyan's prediction during that private conversation was equally unforgettable. - You don't know Turks well.
The time will come and we will judge by the result.
And it turned out that years later, in 2014 at the end of March, on the instructions of President Sargsyan, I led a parliamentary delegation to Syria as a member of parliament... we went to Damascus, the capital of Syria, a once flourishing state engulfed in war, confusion and chaos and on the verge of collapse, and we met Bashar al-Assad in conspiratorial conditions, with a crumpled shirt and overtired.
The tall, slender Bashar, who gave the interlocutors the impression of a surgeon rather than the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of a country caught in the clutches of a devastating war... asked Serzh Sargsyan at the end of the meeting to convey:
- I remember very well our private conversation in Yerevan.
Please convey to Mr. President that he was right. we didn't know the Turks well."
