UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, marking the start of his final session of the General Assembly on Wednesday, expressed hope that the world body can lead the world to a healthier and more peaceful future. “As I participate in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly for the last time as Secretary-General, I have great hope for a better, healthier and more peaceful future, thanks to the work being done here. Through diplomacy, dialogue and cooperation, let us find the solutions our world needs,” he wrote on X.
Furthermore, the outgoing secretary-general called the General Assembly a place where all the world’s most pressing issues were discussed face to face and expressed support for Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who is presiding over the new session. The 81st session of the UN General Assembly officially opened in New York on Tuesday. As is tradition, the General Assembly will hold a high-level week. The general debate will take place from September 22 to 26, and again on September 28.
Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. His speech is expected on September 26.
