UK joins €90 billion military program for Ukraine

The United Kingdom government has reached an agreement with the European Union authorities to join the 90 billion euro military financing program for Ukraine.

In the statement of the office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, reported by TASS, it is stated: "Thanks to this programme, British defense companies will be able to bid for contracts financed by this loan, which will open up access to potential investment of several billion euros, ensure the preservation of quality jobs across the country and strengthen the UK's world-leading military industrial base. The UK's contribution to the initiative will be proportional to the value of the contracts that will go to British manufacturers."

This statement was published against the background of the participation of the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Keir Starmer, in the "coalition of the willing" summit in Paris. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a post on the X social network, emphasized that this will give Ukraine the opportunity to use a wider choice of military suppliers.

In December 2025, the program of 90 billion euros of military financing of Ukraine planned by the EU for 2026-2027 was approved. Of these funds, 30 billion euros will be allocated to the budgetary needs of Kyiv, and 60 billion euros to military expenses. The mentioned program was adopted instead of the failed plan of the European Commission, which proposed to confiscate the assets of the Russian Central Bank frozen in Europe in order to finance the military needs of Kiev. These 90 billion euros will be raised through a pan-European loan, which will be serviced and repaid by EU member states. This money will be provided to Kiev free of charge, with the condition that it will compensate them if Russia pays the reparations in full.

Previously, the representative of the European Commission, Thomas Rainier, clarified that the article "buy European" is present in the program of military financing of Ukraine developed by Brussels. According to this provision, Ukraine is obliged to submit all contracts for the purchase of weapons with these funds to the European Commission for approval. Only when the weapons needed by Kiev or their suitable substitutes are not available in Europe, the European Commission can allow Ukraine to order them from suppliers in other countries.
