The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that on June 20, the external power supply was cut off at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. According to the agency, this is the 20th such case recorded since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to the information of the IAEA mission, the reason for disconnection of the only available external power transmission line of the plant, "Ferroslavnaya-1", was the problem that occurred in the internal power transmission lines of the NPP.
Emergency diesel generators were automatically started immediately after the external power was cut off. They are necessary to ensure the cooling of the active zone of the reactor and to maintain the uninterrupted operation of other vital nuclear safety systems.
