European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen may visit Greenland at the end of the year and announce the allocation of "tens of millions of euros" for the island, Politico reported, citing sources. According to the publication, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Joseph Sikela, will visit Greenland on May 19. There he will meet with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, which can be considered a preparation for the visit of the EU President.
Sikela will also participate in the "Future of Greenland" business conference. The newspaper noted that the US special representative for Greenland issues, Governor of Louisiana Jeff Landry, will participate in this event, but a meeting with the European commissioner is not scheduled.
Meanwhile, a number of Danish officials have expressed the opinion that US President Donald Trump "has not given up on taking this territory under US control", despite the fact that his rhetoric on Greenland has recently become more restrained.
