Iran demands that Kuwait immediately release the four Iranian citizens arrested after the incident involving the ship in the Persian Gulf. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made a corresponding statement.
According to a post on X, Kuwaiti forces "illegally attacked an Iranian ship" near Kuwait's Bubiyan Island, which Tehran says was used by the US to launch attacks on Iran. Araghchi called Kuwait's actions an attempt to "sow discord" and emphasized that Tehran reserves the right to react.
On May 12, Kuwait's Ministry of Interior announced that four arrested Iranian nationals, after attempting to illegally enter the country by sea, confessed to having ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, an elite unit of Iran's armed forces) and planning "hostile operations" against the emirate. According to the ministry, the group tried to enter Bubiyan Island by fishing boat. During the clash with the Kuwaiti troops, the attackers opened fire, injuring one soldier. Two members of the group managed to escape.
