With NATO rearmament required and an increasingly volatile environment, Portugal is set to invest billions of euros in defense over the next decade.
After the NATO summit in The Hague last June, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro pledged to allocate 3.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) to military spending over the next 10 years. To this should be added another 1.5% of indirect costs intended for investments and infrastructure, which can also be used for military purposes.
The project is a large financial undertaking that meets the requirements of the Transatlantic Organization, according to which NATO member states must invest at least 5% of their GDP in defense.
450 million euros. according to estimates, defense spending would need to increase by about that amount each year to meet the target over the next 10 years.
