The Prime Minister of Japan has announced that he is moving in the direction of a peace treaty with Russia

Japan maintains its principled position towards signing a peace treaty with Russia, despite the tension in relations, and considers the absence of such a document to be a sad reality.

According to a TASS correspondent, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced this while participating in the "Republican Rally for the Return of the Northern Territories", as the southern part of the Kuril Islands of Russia is called in Tokyo.

"In fact, it is sad that 80 years after the end of the Second World War, the issue of the "northern territories" has not yet been resolved and a peace treaty with Russia has not been signed. The Japanese government takes this situation seriously," he said.

"Our position on resolving the issue of the ownership of the four northern islands (this same expression is used in Japan for the southern Kuril Islands) and concluding a peace treaty remains unchanged," Takaichi added, repeating the previous statements that "the relationship between Japan and Russia is still difficult" due to the special military operation in Ukraine.
