Actually, I think Maduro was very lucky. International scholar Suren Sargsyan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
"1. After all, he could have met the fate of, say, Gaddafi or Saddam. However, this did not happen. Instead, he will stand trial in an American court with all the same rights as any other defendant on American soil.
2. It is noteworthy that his case will be examined in the New York court. The death penalty is prohibited in that state. Moreover, he has been charged with charges that do not carry the death penalty.
3. He has the right to life and human dignity, and he shall not be subjected to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment.
4. His trial and sentencing will be in the center of public attention, which means an additional defense mechanism for him.
5. For him, the judge will not be called and told what the verdict will be.
6. At the end of the day, he is not an Armenian in prison in Baku, with all its serious consequences.
Now, after all this, it is difficult to say whether this is the result of an arrangement or just his luck," he said.
