Thousands of ships suddenly signaled in the Baltic Sea

Finland's maritime surveillance system received 18,000 false alarms about NATO "ghost ships" in just one hour, Helsingin Sanomat (HS) newspaper reported, citing the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom).

The publication notes that the actual location of the ships was several thousand kilometers away from the location of the signal system in the Baltic Sea. One of the Spanish ships traveling from Somalia to Japan was mistakenly displayed in the Gulf of Finland.

The reason for the failure is unknown. Traficom does not deny that the incident could be the result of deliberate interference with ship tracking systems.
