Scientists have discovered a convenient way to stay alert during a cold

Scientists at Cardiff University (UK) have found that peppermint lozenges can alleviate cold symptoms by improving well-being, mood and focus. This is stated in a study published in the "World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences" (WJPPS).

Eighty-one students participated in the ten-week study. Some participants had mild respiratory infections during the observation period. The participants were divided into three groups. one received peppermint lozenges, the second caramel lozenges without peppermint, and the third did not make any changes to their diet.

Tests have shown that colds slow reaction times, including slow eye movements and impaired concentration. However, in the experiment, those taking the peppermint lozenges experienced an improvement in alertness and attention levels to near-normal levels.

According to study leader Professor Andy Smith, menthol and other aromatic compounds activate areas of the brain associated with wakefulness and reduce the perception of fatigue.

"Even something as simple as a peppermint can make a real difference in how you feel when you're sick," she noted.
