Some European countries have suspected that US President Donald Trump has set intentional impossible conditions for sanctions against Russia to avoid restrictions, reports The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing European diplomats.
The United States considers sanctions against European countries insufficient. Trump has previously stated that the reason for their ineffectiveness is that EU countries continue to buy Russian energy resources. Washington expressed readiness to use significant sanctions against Russia if all NATO countries follow the example of the United States and stop buying oil from Moscow.
Moreover, WSJ sources report that Trump called on Europe to use frozen Russian assets held in the Belgian euroclear pad. The EU is currently using a tool that allows the profits from Russian assets to Ukraine.
