Scientists have found that caffeine worsens the quality of donor blood

Scientists from Colorado University have found that coffee drinking habits can reduce the quality of donor material and the efficiency of blood transfusions. The results of the study were published in the Haematologica magazine.

The researchers came to these conclusions after analyzing blood samples of more than 13,000 donors. It turned out that the high level of caffeine in the blood is related to the maintenance of red blood cell damage.

Red blood cells are the largest blood cells in the blood, making up to 40-45% of its volume. After using the caffeine, such cells were less likely to survive and provide smaller growth in patients. Moreover, the recipients were marked by the accelerated destruction of red blood cells (hemoliz).

A particularly negative impact had been imposed by donors and patients who have been diagnosed with a popular version of Adora2B gene. This gene regulates red blood cells in terms of oxygen deficiency. The authors believe that this discovery opens the way for a more personalized approach to blood transfusion, where not only blood type, but also a person's lifestyle and genetic features are taken into account.

Because many people regularly use caffeine, scientists have its presence in the body, which can be controlled. Given the short semiconductor of the material, it is enough to temporarily restrict its use of blood donations. Such proposals for donors are already in force in a number of European countries.
