The situation in the Middle East continues to worsen, causing large risks for neighboring countries and regions. Prominent Armenian public and politician, philanthropist Artak Tovmasyan spoke with the EACH COVERY about the influence of the Iran-Israel war on the night of June 22.
- Mr. Tovmasyan, the situation in the Middle East has sharpened sharply. The conflict between Iran and Israel has entered an open stage. Yesterday, the US Air Force strikes Iran's territory. How do you assess the situation?
- This is a very serious crisis. We see that the confrontation between Iran and Israel is leaving the scope of local conflicts and is already affected by the whole region, including the Caucasus. Both sides use modern military technologies, including drones, rocket strikes, which increases the scale and risk of escalation.
- What are the main challenges of Armenia in the context of this conflict?
"Armenia is in a unique, but also in a difficult geopolitical position. On the one hand, we have close historical and economic ties with Iran, which is an important partner in the field of energy supply and transit. On the other hand, we see the strengthening of Azerbaijan's position, which is supported by Israel, and it creates additional security risks. In addition, the Armenian Diaspora in Iran needs defense and support.
- It can be said that Armenia must pursue a neutral policy and avoid involvement in this conflict.
- Of course, neutrality is a key position. Armenia should not become a party to the conflict, but on the contrary, it should use its role to mediate and the peacekeeper. This is an opportunity for us to strengthen international ties, to show our diplomatic maturity and increase our reputation.
- How do you assess the role of Russia and China in this situation and their influence on Armenia's security?
- Russia remains the main guarantor of the region's security and, despite the difficult international situation, will continue to maintain stability in the Caucasus. On the other hand, China is in favor of maintaining economic stability and the development of infrastructure projects. Armenia must use this balance of interest to its development and security.
- What specific steps will you recommend to the Armenian government?
- First of all, it is necessary to strengthen the state border and national infrastructure protection, especially in the field of energy, and evacuation programs for our citizens and the Diaspora, and, of course, intensify diplomatic work with international partners to minimize the risks to be involved in regional conflicts. I hope the situation will soon be the benefit of the whole region.
