Grossi expressed optimism about his chances of becoming the new UN Secretary-General

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said he was optimistic about his chances of becoming the next UN secretary-general, despite the fact that he did not have information about the positions of individual countries on his candidacy.

“I remain very optimistic,” he told reporters at a press conference in Vienna, answering a question about the progress of his campaign to lead the world organization. Grossi noted that the process of selecting the secretary-general is ongoing and is a “specific procedure” within the framework of which “countries go through stages of rapprochement.”

He added that another preliminary survey of candidates by countries is expected in the coming weeks. “Of course, countries do not say who they will vote for,” he added.
