French President Emmanuel Macron is discussing the possibility of dissolving the National Assembly (the lower house of parliament) before the 2027 presidential elections, Le Figaro reported, citing its source.
"Some people in the close circle of the president think that this can save us because people will vote responsibly. I, on the contrary, think that it will only drag us to the abyss," the anonymous parliamentarian told the newspaper, claiming that he had discussed this scenario with several ministers and advisers of the president.
According to the source, such a move is seen as a way to prevent Macron's successor from deciding the dates of parliamentary elections independently, while allowing the incumbent to exercise control until the end. According to this scenario, the first and second rounds of the National Assembly and presidential elections will be held on the same dates.
According to the source of the newspaper, the Constitutional Council will not intervene, as it is actually accountable to Macron, who has appointed his ally Richard Ferrand as the head of that body.
