Russia criminalizes the denial of the genocide of the Soviet people
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that establishes criminal responsibility for denying or justifying the genocide of the Soviet people, as well as for insulting the memory of the victims and desecrating their graves. The document was published on the official portal of legal acts.
According to the law, destruction, damage or desecration of graves and monuments of genocide victims, regardless of whether they are located in Russia or outside of its borders, is punishable by up to five years in prison. In addition, denying the fact of the genocide of the Soviet people or justifying it, as well as insulting the memory of the victims, is punishable by imprisonment for up to three years.
