The US has no plans to establish bases in West Africa after leaving Niger

The United States does not plan to locate its bases in West Africa after the withdrawal of troops from the military installation in Niger in 2024. This was announced by the deputy of the USAF Africa Command (AFRICOM), General John W. Brennan Jr.

"We are not going to create drone bases anywhere. Our priority is to get the necessary forces and resources to the right place at the right time and then leave. We do not aspire to be stationed in West African countries for a long time," he said in an interview with Agence France-Presse. Speaking about the situation in the Sahel region, the military leader emphasized that the US continues to cooperate with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, where the military came to power.

However, in 2020-2023, the US has officially suspended security cooperation with those countries due to the military coups that took place there. "We did share information with some so that they could strike key terrorist targets. We continue to maintain contact with our military partners in the Sahel countries, albeit informally," Brennan Jr. added.
