More than 500 migrants have been evacuated off the coast of Crete

In one day, Greece carried out one of the largest migrant rescue operations in recent times, evacuating 545 people from the shores of the island of Gavdos, who were trying to reach Europe by sea.

According to the Greek media, the coast guard of Greece received an alarm about the disaster at dawn on Friday. Three Coast Guard vessels, Frontex vessels and three nearby patrol vessels were immediately deployed to respond.

During the operation, a small fishing boat carrying hundreds of migrants was found. The rescue operation lasted several hours and ended 16 nautical miles southeast of Gavdos Island.
