It's World Polio Day

Vaccinations protect millions of people from both serious infectious diseases and their complications.
Thanks to decades of vaccination against poliomyelitis, the disease has almost disappeared all over the world, the circulation of wild poliovirus still continues only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Ministry of Health explains that poliomyelitis is a viral disease of high infectivity. It affects the nervous system, causing permanent disability and sometimes death.

Children between the ages of 2 and 5 get sick, but older people can also get sick. Poliomyelitis disease has not been recorded in the Republic of Armenia since 1995, which used to cause permanent disability of at least 2-3 children a year.

In 2002, Armenia, among other countries of the European region, was declared a "polio-free" country and successfully maintains this status to this day. And for the further maintenance of the status, it is necessary to ensure the collective insensitivity of the population. Since 2020, our country has switched from the live oral polio vaccine to the combined vaccine with an inactivated component. The most effective and safe way to prevent polio is vaccination.
