22 new genetic risk factors for diabetes were found

Scientists from Emory University (USA) have discovered 22 new genetic regions that affect the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The results of the work were published in the PLOS GENETICS magazine.

Type 2 diabetes continues to spread rapidly all over the world, men are more likely to suffer from this disease than women. The disease is formed both inherited factors and the influence of lifestyles. However, there is little studied how genes interactions affect the risk of the disease with the internal environment of the body.

In a new study, scientists have analyzed the data of the 484,127 participants in British Biobank, comparing their genetic indicators to the level of globulin and sexual hormone. It turned out that the high level of testosterone increases the risk of diabetes in women, while the body's higher concentration in the body, on the contrary, reduces the likelihood of illness.

Taking into account these factors, researchers have identified 22 previously unknown regions of genome related to type 2 diabetes. These locos have not appeared in previous genomic studies.

The authors note that the interaction of hormones and genes can play an important role in the formation of diabetes. This approach, taking into account the factors of the internal environment, will allow them to identify vulnerable groups more accurately and better understand the mechanisms of developing complex diseases.
