Scientists "win" head and neck cancer target one gene

Scientists from Tel Aviv University first edited Sox2 gene using CRISPR technology, which helped eliminate the tumors of the head and neck cancer near mice. The results of the study were published in Advanced Science (ADVSCI).

It was previously assumed that the effective fight against cancer demands several genes, but the new work has shown that the survival of malignant cells can only be secured by one. Such "one genes" become a potential target of CrisPR therapy, "Genetic Scissors" technology.

Scientists have paid special attention to the SOX2 gene, which participates in the progress of the tumors of the head and neck. In order to accurately deliver the CRISPR system to the tumilic, scientists have developed nanomathnis, which contain RNA editor. These particles were covered with antibodies aimed at EGF protein (cell growth stimulator), which provided a high precision delivery of high accuracy.

The drug with head and neck cancer has been given three times at intervals of one week. After the start of therapy, 84 days later, the disappearance of the tumors was registered.

Further research will help to find out if other genes must be targeted to improve the effectiveness of the method. If the experience is successful, the approach can lead to new methods of cancer treatment that eliminate the need for chemotherapy.
