Pete Hegsett's appointment is being questioned even by Republicans

The US Senate confirmed Pete Hegsett as the Secretary of Defense. As the BBC writes, even some Republicans question his candidacy.

The meeting was dramatic. The votes were evenly distributed: 50 to 50. US Vice President James David Vance had to use his constitutional right. He arrived at the Capitol and voted, giving Trump's nominee the vote he needed. Hegsett, 44, a former Fox News anchor who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, promises to make major changes to how the Pentagon operates.

But his leadership will come under close scrutiny, Reuters reported, citing fierce opposition from Democrats and even some Republicans to the controversial nominee.

They have doubts about both his qualifications and his temperament. "We've never had a defense secretary like Hegsett before," Jeremy Suri, a history professor and presidential scholar at the University of Texas at Austin, told Reuters.
