The law legalizing same-sex marriage came into force in Thailand, which became the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize the possibility of such unions. The corresponding royal decree amending the legislation was published in September 2024 and officially entered into force on 23 January.
This law envisages a number of changes related to the articles of the Civil Code, which regulate the issues of both marriage and its dissolution, as well as the ownership and management of the common property of the spouses.
Thailand's government and parliament approved a bill recognizing same-sex marriage in 2024, which became law 120 days after it was published in the Royal Gazette.
