US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that limits the acquisition of US citizenship by birthright.
"This is very important, it's just absurd, we are the only country in the world where citizenship is obtained by birthright," Trump said during the signing of the document.
According to the text of the order, which was published on the White House website, a child would not be eligible to acquire US citizenship at birth, for example, if both parents were in the country legally at the time of birth, but: have only temporary residence documents, including, for example, a tourist or work visa.
If the child's mother was in the United States illegally at the time of birth, and the father was not a United States citizen or permanent resident, the child will also not be able to apply for citizenship by birth.
