American billionaire Elon Musk helped to convince Tehran to release Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was detained in Iran in December 2024. The New York Times reported on the girl's release and return to her homeland.

According to the newspaper, Elon Musk discussed this issue with Amir Said Irawani, the permanent representative of the Islamic Republic at the United Nations. Sala was working in Iran on a journalist's visa until he was arrested on December 19 for "violating the laws of the Islamic Republic".
