Four people were killed and 16 injured in a stampede at the famous Umayyad Mosque in Damascus on Friday, the Syrian state news agency (SANA) reported, Reuters reports.

Five children received fractures, serious bruises and lost consciousness, according to the Civil Defense report. The authorities are trying to find out the causes of the incident and bring the culprits to justice, Damascus Governor Maher Marwan told SANA.

"We are working to take urgent measures so that such incidents do not recur in public places in the future," SANA quoted him as saying.
