At least 71 people were killed in Ethiopia when a truck carrying passengers plunged into a river, a government spokesman in the southern Sidama region said in a statement, Reuters reported.

At least 71 people were killed, including 68 men and three women, Sidama regional government spokesman Vosenyele Simion told Reuters on Monday.

"Five are in a critical condition and are being treated at Bowne General Hospital," he said.
