The army system is planned to be replaced by local defense forces

The present militia system is planned to be replaced by local defense forces, to define their role, management principles, and structure. RA Deputy Defense Minister Arman Sargsyan said this.

The package of draft laws authored by the government "On Amendments and Additions to the Law on Defense" and the attached draft laws were discussed in the first reading at the special session of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security of the RA NA on December 17.

According to Arman Sargsyan, the overall management of the local defense forces will be carried out by the commander of the army corps, and they will be included in the military units operating under the military formation as support units.

The units of the local defense forces will be filled with persons registered in the given community, not attached to wartime posts and registered in the second group of the reserve force or removed from the military registration, on a voluntary basis by signing a contract with the person.

It will not be considered a contract for military service.

The legislative initiative also defines the conditions for the involvement, training and employment of citizens in the units of the local defense forces, which are almost identical to the conditions provided by the current law for the militias.

The deputy minister answered the questions of the deputies. Speaking about the fate of the active militia, Arman Sargsyan informed that by signing new contracts, the latter will become members of the local defense forces.

Armen Khachatryan, deputy chairman of the commission, the relevant reporter, highlighting the proposed changes, noted that the legal relations will be clarified after the regulations.

In the format of the exchange of ideas, the deputies emphasized the importance of the proposed changes.

The legislative package received a positive conclusion.
