The agreements reached between Iran and Oman on issues of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz do not mean its opening, a source close to the Iranian negotiating group stated in an interview with Tasnim agency.
According to the source, Iran conveyed seven conditions for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to the American side through mediators. The source did not disclose their content. According to him, the conditions have been approved by the top leadership of the Islamic Republic, and the strait will remain closed until they are fulfilled.
The interlocutor of the agency also reported that after intensive technical and diplomatic negotiations, Tehran and Muscat reached a final agreement at the end of August. In the near future, it is planned to announce it in the presence of foreign ministers of the Persian Gulf countries.
The source emphasized that the agreement was signed exclusively between Iran and Oman. Other countries of the region, as well as Iraq, will attend the upcoming meeting only to familiarize themselves with the agreed routes and transit conditions.
According to the agreements reached, new routes for entering and exiting the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz have been defined. The entry route will pass entirely through the territorial waters of Iran, a part of the exit route will also be in Iranian waters.
Transit on these routes will be carried out in accordance with the protocols established by Iran. If the agreement is implemented, the southern route, the opening of which the United States previously sought, and which has become one of the main sources of tension, will be closed.
At the same time, the source specifically emphasized that the agreement reached with Oman does not mean the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, through mediators, Iran conveyed to the American side seven conditions for the resumption of navigation. These conditions have been approved by the Islamic Republic's top leadership, and the strait will remain closed until they are met.
Thus, the agreements with Oman define the procedure for the possible opening of the strait, but the decision on the resumption of navigation, according to the source, depends entirely on the actions of the US and the fulfillment of the conditions put forward by Tehran. Iran views this agreement as a step towards strengthening its sovereignty over the route through the Strait of Hormuz.
