The Ministry of Foreign Affairs forwarded a meeting offer to Veronika Zonabendi, the wife of Ruben Vardanyan, who was imprisoned in an Azerbaijani prison, verbally, "To freedom" said Ani Badalyan, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry.
Ruben Vardanyan's wife informed earlier today that no one from the government contacted her, although it was announced. The MFA explained to "Azat" that the meeting offer to Ruben Vardanyan's wife had already been discussed before, and actually passed after the latter's statement.
When asked who exactly from the Foreign Ministry will meet Veronika Zonabendi, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry stated that "the meeting will be organized by competent departments in cooperation." According to "Azatut" information, the dates of the meeting are currently being agreed upon.
Last June, the wife of Ruben Vardanyan, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Azerbaijan, announced a humanitarian initiative, within the framework of which she intends to organize a visit of an international women's delegation to Baku.
Noting that Armenian citizens have been deprived of regular, humanitarian independent contact with their relatives for years, Veronika Zonabend appealed to the Azerbaijani ombudsman, asking to ensure the delegation's visit to Baku, to organize a meeting with the Armenian prisoners kept in Umbaki prison, as well as to deliver to them parcels, photos, and letters prepared by their families.
"For the prisoners, this is a reminder that they are not forgotten," said Ruben Vardanyan's wife, who is also planning to go to Baku as part of that delegation.
Last month, Vardanyan's wife sent 2 letters to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan regarding her upcoming visit to Baku.
Veronika Zonabend asked Sabina Aliyeva to "support the organization of the meeting of the Armenian prisoners held in the Umbaki penal complex, determine the possible format of the visit, the order of delivery of the parcels transferred by the families, as well as the conditions for the safe entry, stay and unimpeded exit of the delegation members."
Vardanyan's wife asked Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to "appoint a person responsible for the coordination of the initiative and provide the necessary diplomatic and practical support for the preparation of the visit." In fact, 10 days after this letter sent on July 30, the Foreign Ministry of Armenia contacted Veronika Zonabend.
