UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the new stage of military escalation in the Persian Gulf and called on the US and Iran to stop military operations and resolve differences through diplomacy.
In a statement published on the X social network, the UN chief said he was concerned about "serious escalation and resumption of military conflicts in the region," including Iran's attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, US strikes on Iranian territory and Tehran's retaliation against targets in neighboring countries.
"All these attacks must stop," Guterres wrote on the X social network.
He warned that a return to large-scale military operations could have disastrous consequences for the people of the region, international peace and security, as well as the world economy.
The Secretary General of the United Nations called on Washington and Tehran to urgently resume negotiations and resolve the remaining controversial issues exclusively through diplomatic means.
