A woman died in a fire at a beach hotel in the Dominican Republic, 1,700 people were evacuated

As a result of a large fire that occurred in the beach resort of Bayahibe in the Dominican Islands, one woman was killed and about 1,700 tourists were evacuated. This is reported by CNN, referring to the local authorities.

According to the statement of the "DAEH" emergency service, 46-year-old Italian woman Francesca Valentino was killed as a result of the fire that broke out at the "Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach" hotel.

"DAEH" also reported that three people were taken to medical facilities, and six received first aid on the spot. Guests, visitors and emergency responders were among the victims.

Videos released by local media showed thick black clouds of smoke rising from the Caribbean coastline as flames spread across the resort's thatched-roof structures.

According to the country's Center for Emergency Operations (COE), "preliminary observations indicate that the fire spread quickly due to the flammability of the palm roof structures as well as the wind."

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, which has a chain of about 8,400 hotels worldwide, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to official sources, the fire has already been brought under control, but its causes are still under investigation. The guests were transferred to other nearby hotels. The "Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace" hotel belonging to the same chain did not suffer any damage.

The COE added that "tourism activities in Bayahibe and surrounding areas remain unchanged and continue to run safely and normally."

Known for its clear waters and white sand beaches, the Dominican Republic is one of the leading tourist destinations in the Caribbean region, welcoming nearly 5.6 million visitors in the first five months of this year.
