Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, amid a conflict with Iran, may call snap parliamentary elections to capitalize on his growing support and avoid an autumn vote when the country will commemorate the victims of the October 7, 2023 attacks by the radical Palestinian Hamas movement.
This was reported by Al-Monitor, referring to Knesset sources. "Netanyahu does not want to hold an election too close to the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks, so that the campaign does not focus on the issue of creating a commission of inquiry into these events, which many Israelis are demanding.
"Netanyahu will obviously focus his election campaign on what was achieved during the war with Iran," said one of the portal's sources. Al-Monitor's sources say that Netanyahu may be trying to take advantage of the results of strikes on Iran so far, fearing that continued operations may not bring Israel further success.
Meanwhile, holding elections in October 2026, as planned, could raise again the question of the failure of Netanyahu's cabinet to allow the October 7 attacks.
