Poland will be able to mine its borders with Russia and Belarus within 48 hours, in the event of a threat, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced.
"I want to inform you that as of now Poland is withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention," Tusk said at a press conference broadcast by TVP Info.
"Within the framework of the Eastern Shield project, we will get the opportunity to mine Poland's border within 48 hours, in case of a threat," emphasized the Prime Minister of Poland.
On February 20, Poland will officially withdraw from the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use, production and stockpiling of anti-personnel mines. In January, Polish Deputy Minister of Defense Cesari Tomczyk stated that after withdrawing from the convention, Poland does not intend to permanently deploy anti-personnel mines on its eastern border, and is considering installing minefields only in case of threat.
