INA: Iraqi presidential elections will be held on February 1

"In the agenda of the session to be held on February 1, the inauguration of a number of deputies and the elections of the country's president are included," it is stated in the press release of the Iraqi parliament, published by the INA agency.

Iraqi presidential elections were scheduled for January 27, but the parliament session was postponed due to the lack of quorum.
On December 29, 2025, the Iraqi parliament elected a new speaker.

From that moment, the calculation of the 30-day period began, during which, according to the country's constitution, the deputies are obliged to elect the president of the republic, and the latter must instruct the largest coalition to nominate a candidate for the position of prime minister.

On January 24, the Coordination Council, which unites representatives of Iraq's Shiite majority blocs and parties, officially announced the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki as the head of the country's new government.

According to the constitution of Iraq, the position of the country's president should be occupied by a Kurd, the position of the prime minister by a representative of the Muslim-Shiite religion, and the position of the speaker of the parliament by a representative of the Muslim-Sunni community.

18 candidates are competing for the post of the president of Iraq, including Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, who is supported by the Kurdistan Democratic Party.
