The French Prime Minister adopted the 2026 budget, bypassing the parliament

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that the bill on the state budget for 2026 was adopted without a vote in the parliament, under the responsibility of the government.

"France needs a budget. That is why I, on behalf of the government, take responsibility for the adoption of the entire bill on the budget for 2026, based on Article 49, Part 3 of the Constitution," he said at the session of the French National Assembly (the lower house of the parliament). After that, the Vice-President of the National Assembly, Sebastyan Shenyu, announced the termination of discussions on this bill.

On Thursday, the French Senate (the upper house of the parliament) voted against the adoption of the country's 2026 budget project. Amélie de Montchalin, the minister responsible for public accounting, admitted during the discussions that the draft budget is "imperfect", but noted that it is the result of a broad compromise reached between all political forces.

The 2026 budget bill presented by the government foresees spending cuts in all sectors except defense, where, on the contrary, spending increases of 6.7 billion euros are planned.
