Georgia does not plan to impose sanctions against Russia and send military personnel to Ukraine

Georgia has not changed its policy and does not plan to apply restrictive measures against Russia, as well as to send its armed forces to Ukraine. The speaker of the country's parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, announced this, commenting on the appointment of the ambassador of Ukraine in Tbilisi after a break of almost four years.

"As you know, the president of Ukraine has appointed an ambassador to Georgia. On the one hand, we welcome that fact, but on the other hand, one question arises: what has changed? Georgia has not changed its policy. As we said four years ago that we will not impose bilateral sanctions against Russia, so we say now. As we said that we will not send our military to fight there, so now the state is not going to send military to Ukraine," Papuashvili told reporters, noting that it was the issues of sanctions against Russia and sending military to Ukraine that caused the Ukrainian ambassador to be recalled from Tbilisi in 2022.

"I hope this fact of the appointment of the ambassador indicates that the Ukrainian authorities have reconsidered the unfortunately hostile rhetoric that we have been hearing against Georgians, as well as anti-Georgian decisions, including against the Georgian state, and have realized that this is not working. Therefore, the appointment of the ambassador is an important step," the Speaker of the Parliament emphasized.
