US President Donald Trump hopes that the planned negotiations with his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro will go "very well".

"I think the meeting with the President of Colombia will go very well. I'm looking forward to it," the American leader told reporters at the White House before leaving for his Mar-a-Lago estate near West Palm Beach, Florida.

He previously announced that he intends to welcome Petro to the White House in early February.

On January 3, Trump issued a statement regarding the US military operation in Venezuela that his warnings about Petro remain in effect.
